Marathoners for Medicine Sponsors

  • Mount Nittany Health System

This spring, I will join a group of local runners participating in various marathons as a means of raising money and awareness for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.  Marathoners in Medicine grew from a single person running the Boston Marathon and collecting money in support of his run, to a group of more than 35 runners who run several different marathons in support of CVIM.  This year, we will also be running in honor and in memory of the person who has served as our honorary head coach from the beginning, Joe Paterno.

In 2003, Joe and Sue Paterno along with PSU Track and Field Olympian Greg Fredericks were asked to help lead the team as honorary coaches.  Sue leading the women, Greg leading the men, and Joe, of course, as the team's honorary head coach.  Joe said various times that he didn't know anything about running a marathon, but year after year, Joe was there, motivating and inspiring the athletes.

Sue Paterno and Greg Fredericks are returning for the 2012 Marathoners for Medicine Team as the honorary women's and men's coaches.  We are pleased to announce that Penn State Women's Volleyball Coach, Russ Rose, is joining the Marathon effort as our 2012 honorary head coach!

Please join me and support the Marathoners for Medicine as we run to raise funds and awareness for CVIM.

CVIM is a free clinic providing medical and dental care, medication assistance and case management services to the thousands in Centre County without healthcare coverage.  Every day, CVIM cares for people with any number of treatable illnesses and conditions, such as:  high blood pressure, diabetes, extreme dental decay, mental health issues, to name a few.

John Sheakoski's Story
It was only last Fall when I was hobbling around on crutches after having a torn meniscus repaired in my right knee.  In fact, I registered for Boston not even knowing if I would be ready or even capable of running 26.2 miles.  After a longer than expected recovery, I was finally able to hit the road to start my marathon training and now feel I am ready to tackle my 7th marathon (3rd Boston).

This certainly will not be my speediest marathon, but it is more about the personal challenge and companionship of fellow local runners that makes the event fun. (believe it or not, it can be a fun run)

As I run my first marathon at the age of 50, please consider helping the CVIM charity I am running to support.  I will run several hundred miles in training before this April 16th race and ask that you consider contributing...all contributions of any size will help this worthwhile organization.
