Marathoners for Medicine Sponsors

  • Mount Nittany Health System

This spring, I will join a group of local runners participating in various marathons as a means of raising money and awareness for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.  Marathoners in Medicine grew from a single person running the Boston Marathon and collecting money in support of his run, to a group of more than 35 runners who run several different marathons in support of CVIM.  This year, we will also be running in honor and in memory of the person who has served as our honorary head coach from the beginning, Joe Paterno.

In 2003, Joe and Sue Paterno along with PSU Track and Field Olympian Greg Fredericks were asked to help lead the team as honorary coaches.  Sue leading the women, Greg leading the men, and Joe, of course, as the team's honorary head coach.  Joe said various times that he didn't know anything about running a marathon, but year after year, Joe was there, motivating and inspiring the athletes.

Sue Paterno and Greg Fredericks are returning for the 2012 Marathoners for Medicine Team as the honorary women's and men's coaches.  We are pleased to announce that Penn State Women's Volleyball Coach, Russ Rose, is joining the Marathon effort as our 2012 honorary head coach!

Please join me and support the Marathoners for Medicine as we run to raise funds and awareness for CVIM.

CVIM is a free clinic providing medical and dental care, medication assistance and case management services to the thousands in Centre County without healthcare coverage.  Every day, CVIM cares for people with any number of treatable illnesses and conditions, such as:  high blood pressure, diabetes, extreme dental decay, mental health issues, to name a few.

Michael Renz's Story
I started running because a close friend signed up for a 10 mile race and invited me to join in on the fun.  He was quickly shedding pounds and getting in great shape so I figured why not, it could only help me also.  We had such a good time that I told him I'd run any race with him that he wanted to do - he called me about a week later while waiting in line to register in person for the Marine Corp Marathon to call my bluff.  I laughed but had no choice but to have him sign me up too.

Shortly after completing my first marathon, and being dissappointed in my time....i became more serious about running. I also started to enjoy running oddly enough.  Enjoying it only made it easier to be out there training, and I started getting better at it.

I started running local races and kept seeing the same names in the results race after race.  I was wondering who these people were and why they were always doing so well in the local races.  What i didn't know was they were all friends who ran together frequently.  Thankfully i found the local running club through my curiosity - NVRC  (Nittany Valley Running Club,
www.nvrun.com )...and started running quite often with a lunchtime group who deemed themselves the "Rec Hall Regulars."  Each person I met was a name i already knew from race results - so it was neat meeting all these people i 'knew' from skimming the results.  I never thought that running with these people would take my training to a new level and better prepare me for races, especially marathons.  But it did, and with their help i shaved about 40 minutes off of my previous best marathon time!

Knowing many of the active NVRC club members, and seeing them join the CVIM fundraising efforts made me want to also participate.  That's how I landed into the CVIM Marathoners for Medicine Team.  Hopefully I can do my part to help support the incredible efforts the CVIM puts into our community.
