Kim Gasper's Story
I had been a competitive runner for 20+ years beginning in the Hazleton Area and then moving out to Bellefonte, Pa. Since moving here, there have been many
"life changing" events, ALL that have impacted my spirit as a runner. I qualified for and then finished my first Boston Marathon on April 14, 1996, among a record
38,000 runners. It was the highlight of my running career and one that I wanted to re-live the five consecutive years I went back. My only regret was not experiencing
Boston earlier in my running career and joining the Quarter Century Club. On April 16, 2007, the last time I ran Boston, the weekend started in anticipation and excitement.
I would get the chance to share the experience with my friend, Jen Herbstritt, who had qualified for her first Boston Marathon. We were proud to be a part of the Centre
Volunteers in Medicine team that day. The miserable weather and painful finish were a precursor to the tragic events that unfolded that day. The Virginia Tech tragedy would
rob Jen of her spirit and brother that day and change many lives forever that made the trek from Boston back to State College.
On May 27th, 2010, my son, Jonathan, came into the world and swept up my heart and made my life complete. There is no greater love than the love you have for your child. On
January 22nd, 2012, JoePaterno, our beloved coach, teacher and most genuine human being, moved on from his storied life on earth to the next chapter in heaven. He left an indelible
mark on our hearts ad challenges us to "make an impact"in all aspects of our everyday lives.
It has been tough coming to terms with not being a "competitive runner", but being able to be a part of a group of runners that use their passion as runners to help those that work hard
to take care of their families but struggle without healthcare makes every step I take worth it. The volunteers at CVIM are the heroes and it is an honor to run in their footprints. If you are
able, please consider making a donation to CVIM and thank the many volunteers that keep our community healthy and strong. "Make an Impact" that will change lives forever!
