This spring, I will join a group of local runners participating in various marathons as a means of raising money and awareness for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.  Marathoners in Medicine grew from a single person running the Boston Marathon and collecting money in support of his run, to a group of more than 35 runners who run several different marathons in support of CVIM.  This year, we will also be running in honor and in memory of the person who has served as our honorary head coach from the beginning, Joe Paterno.

In 2003, Joe and Sue Paterno along with PSU Track and Field Olympian Greg Fredericks were asked to help lead the team as honorary coaches.  Sue leading the women, Greg leading the men, and Joe, of course, as the team's honorary head coach.  Joe said various times that he didn't know anything about running a marathon, but year after year, Joe was there, motivating and inspiring the athletes.

Sue Paterno and Greg Fredericks are returning for the 2012 Marathoners for Medicine Team as the honorary women's and men's coaches.  We are pleased to announce that Penn State Women's Volleyball Coach, Russ Rose, is joining the Marathon effort as our 2012 honorary head coach!

Please join me and support the Marathoners for Medicine as we run to raise funds and awareness for CVIM.

CVIM is a free clinic providing medical and dental care, medication assistance and case management services to the thousands in Centre County without healthcare coverage.  Every day, CVIM cares for people with any number of treatable illnesses and conditions, such as:  high blood pressure, diabetes, extreme dental decay, mental health issues, to name a few.

In 2007, I got to know a group of people who were running the Boston Marathon to raise money for Centre Volunteers in Medicine. I had never thought about running a marathon before, but the more I learned about CVIM, the more I wanted to help. CVIM helps hardworking members of our community who aren't eligible for government assistance but struggle to pay for healthcare.

So I decided to run my first marathon and qualify for Boston. To my own surprise, I did it. I've run every Boston since - this will be my 6th in a row.

I've been working hard to get ready for Boston this spring. You can see some pictures of my training on my Facebook page (no account required unless you want to comment).

The support I get from my family and friends, and the thought that I am doing my small part to help friends and neighbors access needed medical care, keeps me going when things get rough, as they invariably do in the last miles of a marathon. I hope you'll support me by making a donation in my honor to CVIM. Any amount is appreciated!
