This spring, I will join a group of local runners participating in various marathons as a means of raising money and awareness for Centre Volunteers in Medicine.  Marathoners in Medicine has grown from a single person running the Boston Marathon and collecting money in support of his run, to a group of more than 35 runners who run several different marathons in support of CVIM.

In 2003, Joe and Sue Paterno along with PSU Track and Field Olympian Greg Fredericks were asked to help lead the team as honorary coaches.  Joe said various times that he didn't know anything about running a marathon, but year after year, Joe was there, motivating and inspiring the athletes.

Two years ago Penn State Women's Volleyball Coach, Russ Rose, joined the Marathon effort as our honorary head coach! We are pleased to announce that Russ Rose will return as honorary head coach for the 2014 Marathoners for Medicine Team and Sue Paterno and Greg Fredericks are returning as the honorary women's and men's coaches.

Please help me raise funds and awareness for CVIM.

CVIM is a free clinic providing medical and dental care, medication assistance and case management services to the thousands in Centre County without healthcare coverage.  Every day, CVIM cares for people with any number of treatable illnesses and conditions, such as:  high blood pressure, diabetes, extreme dental decay, and mental health issues.

Why I'm running for CVIM: It's a great cause.

On April 21, I will join a group of local runners in the Boston Marathon to raise money and awareness for Centre Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM), Centre County’s free medical and dental clinic.

Now more than ever, CVIM needs our support. I’m writing to ask you to support those friends and neighbors of ours in Centre County who have inadequate health and dental care. The Affordable Care Act leaves a gap for those who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to afford health insurance. And the ACA does not address dental care.

Last year, CVIM volunteer doctors saw almost 700 patients (almost four times each) and filled more than 10,000 prescriptions. CVIM volunteer dentists saw almost 500 patients (more than twice each). Today, more than 2300 people are presently waiting for dental appointments at CVIM.

CVIM is a community effort to help our Centre County neighbors in need. Thanks to your generosity, CVIM is able to lessen the burden on these families by providing healthcare, dental treatment, and medications at no charge.

Please consider supporting the good works of CVIM by sponsoring me and/or other runners with a donation. Every penny of your tax-deductible contribution will go directly to support the services provided by CVIM.

Please give online via the link on this page. If you prefer, you may mail a check to CVIM (with “Marathoners” and my name in the memo line) at 2520 Green Tech Drive, Suite D, State College, PA 16803.

On behalf of the patients at CVIM, we thank you for your support.

In health,

-George
