Mike Casper's Story
Please join me in the fundraising effort for CVIM.
As you may know, I've been running for a long time, since my freshman year of high school, and more recently have put on a number of difference races here in Pennsylvania, but this feels very different. I don't think I've ever been as excited about, and honored to be part of a running project as I am for this one. I had 4 months off from running last fall, and it feels great to be back at it. My early morning runs in the cold have been magical. But more importantly, by joining the Marathoners in Medicine effort, I can feel it, that I'm running for much more than just myself. With your partnership, we're helping some of our neediest neighbors access their most basic medical and dental care. Your donation supporting me in this run will give me a boost of power and exhilaration with each mile, with each step. I will be running the Chinkalamoose Half Marathon in central PA at 8 a.m. on April 27, 2014. Through your donation, you can run it with me!
Centre Volunteers in Medicine is a free clinic providing quality medical and dental care, case management, and medication assistance to hard working Centre County residents without health insurance. Currently there are over 11,000 residents without healthcare and over 30,000 without access to dental care.
CVIM case managers, since January 1, have assisted 206 individuals to navigate the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. Of those 206 individuals:
- 26 were eligible for health insurance through the Marketplace
- 2 were eligible for health insurance through their employer as a result of ACA
- 7 qualified for medical assistance
- 2 found jobs that offered healthcare
- 169 individuals fell into the gap between earning too much to be eligible for Medicaid and not enough for the ACA mandates to apply.
CVIM’s dental clinic provides emergency and restorative care, basic hygiene, and specialty referrals. There are 2,391 individuals on the dental waiting list at CVIM who have passed eligibility and have never been seen. Additionally, the ACA does not address dentistry.
